The Ground You Walk On is a continuation of a previous photographic project entitled From the Muddy Banks, which sought to create a biography of the Waimakariri River, mapping the ways we utilise, shape, and value this significant waterway as both resource and taonga. In this new iteration of the work, a critical look is taken at the impact of colonisation on the river and surrounds, as well as the role of photography in the narratives created around our natural environment. The artist traces the physical and psychological pathways that led her to the river, analysing her place within this landscape and what draws us into nature.
